Dr. Pradeep Chowbey belongs to the cadre of the pioneer laparoscopic surgeons in India. He has graphed his career with singular determination to develop, evaluate and propagate Minimal Access, Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery in India. The advent of Laparoscopic surgery with his hands became a point in India's medical history.

Dr. Chowbey established the Minimal Access and Bariatric Surgery Centre, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi in 1996, which was the first of its kind in the Asian subcontinent.


Surgical Milestones

Dr Chowbey has had the honour of operating on His Excellency Shri K R Narayanan former President of India for gall bladder surgery (March 29, 2001), His Holiness Dalai Lama for gall bladder surgery (October 10, 2008).

With over 72000 surgeries to his credit he is featured in the Guinness Book of Records 1997 and Limca Book of Records 2000 – 2017 (consecutive years) as the first Endoscopic surgeon performing most number of minimal access surgeries.

Pioneering work

He was the first to perform Laparoscopic cholecystectomy in North India, He was the first to use the Spider technology to perform Bariatric Surgery in Asia Pacific Region and also the first to perform MAFT (Minimally Invasive Fistula Technology) in Asia Pacific Region. He devised a unique method of performing Endoscopic Hernia Repair (TEP) that has been well accepted globally. He also pioneered a novel endoscopic approach for scarless surgery in the neck.

Center of Excellence

His Institute at Max Healthcare is the First Centre to receive the Center of excellence accreditations in India for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, Hernia surgery by Surgical review Corporation, USA (2010). The center is also recognized and acknowledged as a Global Centre of Excellence in the field of Endosurgery.



Dr Chowbey formulated the worldwide guidelines and recommendations for hernia surgery with core group of experts: “Guidelines for laparoscopic (TAPP) and endoscopic (TEP) treatment of Inguinal Hernia (International Endohernia Society (IEHS)” in 2012, revised in 2014. He also formulated the “Worldwide Guidelines for Groin hernia management” in 2016, Holland.

He was awarded Honorary Membership of German Hernia Society at Oldenburg, Germany in May 2011, honorary membership of Indonesian Hernia Society at Bali, Indonesia in 2009 and Gulf Cooperation Council Hernia Society (National Chapter of Asia Pacific Hernia Society), Dubai in 2010.

Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery

His Biography has been published in the Obesity Surgery Journal (the official journal of International Federation of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders) in April 2016. He was felicitated with the Honorary membership of the Egyptian Society for Bariatric Surgery. He has also been felicitated with the Honorary Membership from the renowned Japanese Society of Endoscopic Surgeons in Osaka, Japan for his enormous contributions in the field of Endoscopic surgery. He has authored 200 original scientific papers in international and national indexed journals and contributed chapters for various Text / Reference books including the prestigious publications like Springer, Jaypee, Elsevier. He has written one chapter in the esteemed international Atlas of Laparoscopic Hepat-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery- “Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Hepaticojejunostomy”(2015)



He has published several national and international textbooks as the Chief Editor which include “Surgical Repair of abdominal wall hernias”, “Hand-Book of Bariatric Surgery”, “Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy – A comprehensive atlas”, “Video-assisted Fistula Treatment” in 2013, “Single-Port Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy using X-Cone and reusable Hand Instruments” in 2012 and "Endoscopic Repair of Abdominal Wall Hernias" (1st Ed. in 2004 & 2nd Ed. in 2012).


National Guidelines

Dr Chowbey formulated the Minimal Access Surgery - Guidelines and Recommendations that were released by the Hon'ble President of India Dr KR Narayanan at Rashtrapati Bhavan in July 2002. He with other experts formulated guidelines for Endoscopic hernia surgery and also on Metabolic & Obesity (MOSI) surgery in Nov. 2008 and December 2010.


Teaching & Training

Trained more than 20,000 surgeons from around the world in minimally invasive surgeries as teaching and training has been his passion and an integral part of his career.


Honorary memberships and Lifetime Achievement awards

He has been felicitated with the first honorary membership of the International Endohernia Society (IEHS) for his clinical and scientific contributions in the development of Laparo-endoscopic hernia surgery (2017).

He has also been felicitated with the Honorary membership of the United Arab Emirates Surgery Society, Honorary membership of the Indonesian Society of Endo Lap Surgeons (ISES), Honorary membership of Association of Minimal Access surgeons of India.

He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award by IAGES in February, 2015 for his significant contributions to Endoscopic surgeries in India, Lifetime Achievement award by Human Care Charitable Trust in August 2014, Legend during the Lifetime Award by Balkan Ji Bari International September, 2013, Bharat Jyoti Award, 2006, Rashtriya Rattan Award & Gold Medal for Medical Excellence, December 2005,  Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award for excellence work in the laparoscopy field, November 2005, Dhanvantari Award for Excellence in Health Care, November 2005, Ratna award in Laparoscopic Surgery by Punjab Government in February, 2000, Arya award for most compassionate doctor in 1997.

He was awarded the “Degree of Honorary Doctorate” by AMITY University, Noida, UP on 7th December 2013, Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa Doctorate) by His Excellency Governor of MP and the Vice-Chancellor of theUniversity of Jabalpur, October 2007.
