Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the International Bariatric Club (IBC) and the University of Oxford I am delighted to invite you to the 1st IBC Oxford Congress to be held from March 26th-27th, 2018 at Christ Church, University of Oxford. The Dean of Christ Church, The Very Reverend Professor Martyn Percy is honoured to welcome you to Christ Church and to this splendid inaugural congress which will provide a forum for the detailed analysis and interrogation of key issues in the management of obesity and diabetes from a basic science, medical, endoscopic, surgical and public health perspective.
Christ Church is the largest college of the University of Oxford and has a rich history of academic excellence, innovation, leadership and unimaginable architectural beauty. Notable alumni of Christ Church include King Edward VII, 13 British Prime Ministers, the founder of the state of Pennsylvania, William Penn, the poet W.H. Auden and the author Lewis Carroll (real name Professor Charles Dodgson) who wrote ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Christ Church is also one of a select few colleges chosen to be a filming location for the 'Harry Potter' films. However it is the scientific pedigree of Christ Church that make it a fitting venue for this inaugural meeting with scientists such as Albert Einstein, Sir Tim Berners-Lee (inventor of the 'World Wide Web'), Sir John Maddox (former editor of the journal Nature), the physicist Robert Hooke and the father of modern medicine Sir William Osler all firmly rooted in the scientific fabric of Christ Church.
I am very grateful to the 4700 IBC members for their great support for this congress as well as to the University of Oxford, the Facebook Communications Team based in San Francisco and the industry sponsors of this congress who have helped make what was simply an idea a few years ago into a reality. The congress is indeed the culmination of years of hard work to create a unique meeting in a unique venue. The lectures, debates and expert analysis sessions have been carefully selected and the speakers are established as well as emerging national and international leaders who have kindly given their valuable time to educate us so we can better care for our patients.
