Professor Jean-Marc Chevallier, MD,PhD

Doctor Jean-Marc, Jacques CHEVALLIER is Professor of surgery at the Hôpital Européen Georges Pompidou (HEGP) belonging to the Assistance Publique- Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP),

Chief of the Metabolic and Obesity department in the  

Service de Chirurgie Générale, Digestive et Oncologique. He was President of the SOFFCO-MM (Société Française et Francophone de Chirurgie de l'Obésité et des Maladies Métaboliques, French  part of the IFSO).

He was Chair of the 14th World Congress of IFSO in 2009 in Paris and is now Member at large in the European Chapter and in the Executive Board of IFSO (International Federation for Surgery of Obesity) and designated as President-Elect for 2020-2022.

He is also Director of the Anatomy Department and the research team :Equipe d’Accueil URDIA N°EA 4465 at the University René Descartes Paris 5.

After receiving his medical degree from the University René Descartes Paris 5, Dr Chevallier completed his residency in Surgery at the Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, where he served as Chief resident of general surgery. Prior to joining the Hôpital Européen Georges Pompidou, Dr Chevallier served as director of laparoscopic and bariatric surgery at the Hôpital Boucicaut in Paris 15.

Dr Chevallier's clinical interests include surgery for severe obesity, minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopic), and gastrointestinal surgery.  He has performed more than 5000 operations for severe obesity since 1994. His research interests include the pathophysiology of obesity, diabetes and related diseases and outcomes of laparoscopic management of obesity, gastrointestinal diseases.  Beside Obesity his educational interests followed his PhD thesis in 1987 about the " retrohepatic segment of the inferior vena cava: embryology, anatomy and clinical applications. "New concepts in vascular exclusion of the liver and liver transplantation have been a major focus of his educational interests.

He has authored more than 200 scientific papers, editorials, textbook chapters, and video productions. He is member of the editorial board of Obesity Surgery and reviewer of Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases and Surgical and Radiological Anatomy. He has been an invited speaker for more than 100 regional, national and international lectures on the subject of obesity surgery and laparoscopic surgery. He participated to the creation of Obesity Surgery Evidence-based guidelines of the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES) and was National expert at the "Haute Autorité de Santé" concerning Gastric Bands and Care in Obesity Surgery 

He has been director of courses and workshops on advanced laparoscopic surgery and trains fellows and residents in advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgery. Finally he is responsible for the Research in clinical and 3D anatomy in the University Paris 5, teaches clinical anatomy to medical students and residents and support researchers in their Anatomical and Surgical thesis.
